April 2010 Edition
GAP Champions

Within our GAP world there is one set of Champions that really need some special praise.

They're a super special part of the fostering process, they do their thing without thinking and without too much fuss and in doing so they tell us so much about our foster dogs. The Cats! We have a wonderful group of foster homes who own Feline Foster Assessors and without them we'd be really stumped.

Given a greyhound's instinct to chase GAP are very careful to assess the foster dogs in a home with cats before we say that they'd be suitable to live in a house with a cat. After some initial assessments at Whispering Palm Kennels we judge the dog's reactions to our assessor dog Charlie and use this as an initial gauge, then we introduce the dogs to "Tuna Fish" our furreal cat and sometimes we even swing by Pampered Pooch to meet Yoshi, Oscar, April and May in the cat enclosure, before these foster dogs head off to live with our Feline Foster Assessors.

It is these wonderful Feline Foster Assessors and their families that complete the job of cat testing for us. Pictured above is Myles, GAP Victoria's office dog with their cat, Alice, who both help out with all of their temperament testing.

So we'd like to give a HUGE thanks to all past Feline Foster Assessors and of course our current batch of Chip Airey, Misty Valentine, Celia Slinks, Jazz Saw, the McKellar clan of Misty, Diamond and Angel and the Harris/Vijgenboom pair, Koshka and Moet. Add to that a special thought for Lyptik Lourensz because she is taking a break from being a Feline Foster Assessor while she's recovering from recent surgery.

Go the cats!!

ADVANCE® Race Night

After their trackside display on 10th March, the ADVANCE® tent was surrounded by a crowd of trainers and the ADVANCE® team received a wad of completed questionnaires in their hands while the trainers also seemed pretty pleased with their free bag of dog food!

Greyhound Blood Donors

Did you know that the Greyhound is also a special breed with life saving qualities? Greyhounds' have a special physiological trait in that their blood is so unique that it can help save the lives of other dogs. Greyhounds are universal donors and their blood can not only be used to help all other types of dogs, but is also easily taken from a qualified vet - in much the same way that you would donate blood through the Red Cross.

As part of GAP's vetting arrangement with Perth Vet Emergency, all GAP greyhounds that are sterilised at the clinic also give a blood donation that is essential for the running of the Emergency Surgery. The blood collected is used to save the lives of other dogs that require blood transfusions when suffering from serious injuries.

However, like the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, blood is always required for emergency procedures, and its often hard to come by. Perth Vet Emergency is currently seeking greyhounds to become regular blood donors, and can offer an incentive in exchange for the donation.

Did you know?

  • Unlike humans, who have four blood types (A, B, AB and O), dogs have at least eight major groups.
  • Like humans, dogs that receive an incompatible blood type can die.
  • There is no breed-specific blood type and a Great Dane can give blood to a Chihuahua if the type is compatible.
  • Horses have 15 recognised blood types while cats have two.

Please call PVE on 9204 0400 during opening hours (M-F 6pm - 8am; Sat/Sun 24hrs) to discuss registering your greyhound as a regular blood donor - your greyhound may well be a life saver. PVE is located at 305 Selby Street, Osborne Park and operates as an after hours emergency-only clinic.
