February 2010 Edition
Walking Group 2010

The first of the Greyhound Walking groups was held in January as it was the first month of the year that contained 5 weekends.

The day dawned sunny and thankfully a little cooler than the heat that had been present in the days before. A good day for a walk…

There was a fantastic turnout for the first walk – about 17 people and 11 dogs, including 3 fosters! The walk went from the car park up and over the bridge and along the other side to the park then continued around the park and past the gorgeous swanky upper class houses before turning back towards the foreshore and then in for a paddle, back over the bridge and right through the middle of town. The weather was lovely and mild but warm enough.

There was a great amount of interest from the public generating comments like -

  • 'Look at all the dogs'
  • 'Look dad what sort of dog are they?' 'They’re greyhounds - they race'
  • 'What cool dogs'
  • 'Aren't they good dogs!'

We have received feedback in the GAP office that has indicated that people are interested in going to a walking group more often. As a result Elizabeth has said that she is quite happy to do it on the 3rd Sunday of every month, so more details will follow on the website once locations are determined.

That means this weekend! So the plan for this weekend is 10am Sunday 21st February to walk at Herdsman’s Lake. Meet at the carpark on Pearson Street (between Pearson Way and Selby St North). This is near one of our supporting vet clinics - Perth Vet Emergency.

Give Elizabeth a call on 0427 012 172 to let her know if you’re interested. A $5 donation to GAP will be charged per walker.

  • Photos for Calendar

We are now accepting photo submissions for the 2011 calendar.

This year GAP WA will again take it’s turn to coordinate an ever better 2011 National GAP Calendar for Australia so dust off the camera and start clicking. Submissions from all states will need to be received by Friday 25 June 2010.

Please refer to the following guidelines for submitting your photos.

Image Quality: Digital photos are preferred however printed photos will still be accepted if they are of a good enough quality to be scanned and enlarged. Images submitted need to be the highest quality so they can be enlarged to the larger sizes printed in the calendar. To improve quality, look at your digital camera settings and make the size setting = largest and the quality setting = finest this will be the biggest possible file size at the best quality.

Naming: Your photos must be individually labelled with your name and your dog's name.

    1. Digital photos
It is important to have a clear reference of the Dog/s name and the Adopter/s name.
When saving files to disk rename the file in the following format: DogName_OwnerName_.jpeg
Make sure each photo on the disk is named along with the disk itself.

    2. Printed Photos
Please write Dog/s name and Adopter/s name clearly on the back of each photo.
If more than one greyhound is in the submitted photos, clearly state the name of each greyhound and their colour.

    Please post your photos to:
    GAP Calendar Photos
    PO Box 6
    Cannington WA 6987

Or email them to Tammara or Kerry.

Remember to follow the naming guidelines so that we can ensure your dog is correctly identified if your pictures are selected. Please note, any photos submitted for use in the calendar may be used by GAP for promotional purposes and therefore your permission for publication is assumed by the act of submitting your photos. If you do not wish to have your photos used for further promotional purposes please notify GAP staff at the time of submission.

    Microchip Updates

GAP recently checked with the two different Microchip database companies, Australasian Animal Registry and Central Animal Records, to see what dogs were listed as still being owned by GAP. Surprisingly lots!!!

Once you’ve adopted your greyhound, it is yours. We’d like to remind you that while we still have your details on record, it is probably a better thing for your dog to be registered to you!

When the dogs are adopted we ask people to wait out their 4 week road test period before changing the ownership details by sending off the fax to the microchip company. However it seems to be something has been missed by many new families. If you’re not sure if you have changed your details on the microchip forms check  to see if your dog’s name and number are on the lists from Central Animal Records or Australiasian Animal Registry.

    Advance Race Night

As part of their ongoing relationship with GAP, the team from Advance are coming out to Greyhounds WA to sponsor the race meeting at Cannington on Wednesday 10 March.

They will be offering a short questionnaire to greyhound trainers and owners to discover more about what they are currently feeding. This will lead to increased understanding of how the trainers and owners see nutrition within the racing environment.

    Perth Cup

It is that time again, Perth’s largest race meeting is being held on Saturday 13th March with the running of the Sky Racing Perth Cup. The cream of the racing crop, including a number of contending interstate hopefuls, will be at Cannington to try and win the prestigious Perth cup and their share of the $140,000 prize pool.

At the beginning of the night GAP will again be having some GAP hounds at the gates to greet the crowds as they arrive for their night of entertainment. If you’re heading down please come along and have a pat to meet some of the current foster dogs.

    New Adoption Fees

Despite having terrific sponsorships with Advance, Bayer, PUPi and Amrex Behaviour and equally wonderful partnerships with our vet clinics we have noticed GAP operating costs have increased and the adoption fee needs to be increased to $300 as from 1 March 2010.

We still believe that this offers an adoption package truly jam packed with value and support for potential adopting families. Anyone who has registered an Application to Adopt prior to 1 March will be charged $250 while we are still looking for a suitable match. However any applications received after 1 March will be charged the $300 fee.

    Senior Hounds

GAP currently has some lovely senior ladies who have been looking for homes for quite some time. We often find that dogs over about 6 years of age tend to be harder to home, despite the fact that these dogs are actually only middle age, and have wonderful personalities.

If you think a senior girl may just fit in your life, or you have a friend that may be contemplating adopting a greyhound, please give some serious consideration to our older girls. Please note that, unfortunately, none of these girls are suited to living with a cat.

Meet the Girls: Dolly, Bella and Angel

    Dolly

Race Name: Minnesota Doll| Colour: Brindle and White | Birthday: 1 July 2000| Sex: F

    Bear

After a long stint as a family pet living with a German Shepherd and a young child, a change in Dolly's family's circumstances has seen her returned to GAP for a new home. She is an adorable girl, but don't let her age fool you! She's keeping up with her 4yo foster brother without a worry! Dolly is a polite, well mannered girl who'll just slip right into any family.

    Bella

    Race Name: Buck's Reward| Colour: Black and White| Birthday: 11 September 2002| Sex:F

    Dog Name

Bella is a very small package but she has a pretty big personality! She's been in foster care as an only dog and was enjoying nice long walks around the coffee strip! She is now living with a whippet x jack russell who is apparently pretty upset that bella just doesn't want to play all day! Bella was a pretty tidy race dog, so a really well earned retirement is on the cards for her!

    Angel

Race Name: Ima Dreamer| Colour: White and Blue| Birthday: 23 May 2001| Sex:F

    Dog Name

Angel's family has had to move interstate and as a result, she needs a new home. She's currently in foster care with Tiger, whose foster carers recently failed fostering by adopting him! She's a beautiful girl who is pretty cruisy and doesn't let too much faze her. We've homed a fair few of Angel's pups now and they've all been so gorgeous!
