January 2010 Edition
Walking Group 2010

New for 2010, Elizabeth, owned by Mensarka, has kindly offered to host a new walking group. To be held on the fifth Sunday of each month, where one occurs, the walking group offers a nice alternative to playgroups for greyhound owners to get together. The group will embark on a leisurely walk with other greyhounds and their owners. What a sight it should be!

A $5 donation to GAP will be charged per walker.

The first 2010 walking group is on this Sunday 31st January at 2pm at the Mandurah Foreshore. Meet the group in carpark after Gibson Street roundabout. Don't forget your poo bags!

For enquiries, please contact Elizabeth on 0427 012 172.

For information on future walking groups, please check the website.

Photos for Calendar

We are now accepting photo submissions for the 2011 calendar.

This year GAP WA will again take it’s turn to coordinate an ever better 2011 National GAP Calendar for Australia so dust off the camera and start clicking. Submissions from all states will need to be received by Friday 25 June 2010.

Please refer to the following guidelines for submitting your photos.

Image Quality: Digital photos are preferred however printed photos will still be accepted if they are of a good enough quality to be scanned and enlarged. Images submitted need to be the highest quality so they can be enlarged to the larger sizes printed in the calendar. To improve quality, look at your digital camera settings and make the size setting = largest and the quality setting = finest this will be the biggest possible file size at the best quality.

Naming: Your phtos must be individually labelled with your name and your dog's name.

1. Digital photos
It is important to have a clear reference of the Dog/s name and the Adopter/s name.
When saving files to disk rename the file in the following format: DogName_OwnerName_.jpeg
Make sure each photo on the disk is named along with the disk itself.

2. Printed Photos
Please write Dog/s name and Adopter/s name clearly on the back of each photo.
If more than one greyhound is in the submitted photos, clearly state the name of each greyhound and their colour.

Please post your photos to:
GAP Calendar Photos
PO Box 6

Or email them to Tammara.

Remember to follow the naming guidelines so that we can ensure your dog is correctly identified if your pictures are selected. Please note, any photos submitted for use in the calendar may be used by GAP for promotional purposes and therefore your permission for publication is assumed by the act of submitting your photos. If you do not wish to have your photos used for further promotional purposes please notify GAP staff at the time of submission.

Interested In Fostering?

Iif you ever thought about trying fostering, why not try it now! While we need any foster carers, we typically have trouble assessing the dogs for their suitability to live as an “only” dog in a household with no other canine companionship and for their “cat tolerance” and ability to live in a home with cats.

GAP supplies collars, leads and coats for dogs in foster care and thanks to our National Sponsor we can supply Advance dog food biscuits for the dogs nutritional needs.

So if you’re interested in giving fostering a go, even if you only foster over this busy time frame, please don’t hesitate to email or call Tammara on 0411 152 686.

Feeding Advice - Wet Food or Not?

Many people ask the staff here at GAP just what they should be feeding their dog, and they struggle to make the choice between wet and dry food. We asked the team at Advance to give us an insight into the facts about wet food.

Did you know wet food contains 1/3 to ¼ of the amount of calories in the same volume of dry food. You can supplement up to 10% of wet meat to increase palatability for dogs without losing the benefits of the super premium foods.

Some common generalisations made about canned food are that it:

  • Is high in water content,
  • Contains cheaper cuts of meat,
  • Causes diarrhoea, and
  • Is more expensive than dry food to feed.

So, are any of these comments true?

Canned foods are high in water content - TRUE

FACT: Meat is approximately 75 - 80% water before it’s cooked. The main ingredient in ADVANCE wet foods is meat so when the meat is canned, most of the moisture goes into the can also.

So, is this a bad thing? No, water is one of the most essential nutrients in a pet’s diet. Therefore, having a diet high in water content can be beneficial in preventing dehydration and serious medical emergency, particularly in hotter temperatures and for dogs that don't drink enough fluids.

  •

They contain cheaper cuts of meat - FALSE

Basically, you get what you pay for.Canned food that is available in the supermarket will tend to have cheaper quality ingredients than super premium pet foods but the same also goes for dry pet foods.Super market brands may also have added colours and flavours, an increased amount of grains and will also have varying recipes.

ADVANCE uses only the best available ingredients making it highly digestible, no colours and flavours and is always made to a fixed recipe. This ensures that the wet diets will have similar “back end” performance to their dry diets.

Wet food causes diarrhoea - FALSE

Diarrhoea or digestive upsets can be caused by a number of reasons including:

  • a sudden change in diet - we recommend that you gradually introduce any new food into your pet’s diet.
  • over eating
  • a poorly digestible diet - when low quality ingredients are used in a pet food, the animals body can’t break it down and absorb the nutrients, so they may pass through the body party undigested.

ADVANCE is formulated using only the best quality ingredients so that the body can beak it down and use all of the nutrients.

Wet food is more expensive than dry food to feed - TRUE

On a per calorie basis wet food generally is more expensive than dry food. Market research tells us that most Super Premium dry food customers also feed some wet food for taste and variety. But many are buying this wet food from the supermarket, which is often a poorer quality food. Check out your local pet food supplier for a better quality wet food.
