Goodbye for now from Tammara Olds

Saying goodbye is probably the one thing I dislike over and above anything else.

So, in saying goodbye to the GAP community that I have been a part of for the past 5 years, I can't help but well up with a few tears. I'm not one for endings, I prefer to think every door is left open for eternity. GAP is something that will be in my life so many years to come yet and just because I am moving on a different path, it doesn't change my passion for greyhounds and for helping to get as many of them into wonderful homes as I can.

I have made some wonderful friendships at GAP that I am sure will last a lifetime and have met some amazing dogs who have literally changed peoples lives.

During my time at GAP we made some significant changes (not always evident from an adopters’ perspective but invaluable for us).

Over the past three years we:
    • Built a new database
    • Designed and implemented a new website
    • Changed the Dog Act 1976 Regulations to exempt GAP greyhounds from the requirement to be registered while awaiting a forever home
    • Met with the Minister for Local Government's Principal Policy Officer for successful inclusion of our muzzle legislation amendment to the Dog Bill 1976 (we still just wait in hope of this going to Parliament for ratification)
    • Won the largest team at the MIllion Paws Walk and continue to worry the big companies like Rio Tinto with the number of supporters we attract
    • Implemented regular playgroups and walks run exclusively by volunteers - credit to you guys!
    • Built our foster carer list from 6 people to over 60 with about 25 regular foster carers
    • Hired a boarding kennels to increase our accountability by providing consistent entry assessments for every GAP dog admitted into the program and increase the number of dogs we can enter into the program
    • Built successful relationships with Polytechnic West, Perth Vet Emergency, Pets 2 Vets Transport, Murdoch University Bioethics (we provide a lecture the first year students on racing welfare) and Pet Rescue
    • Raised funds for a brand new 6 berth air-conditioned trailer (which is yet to arrive)
    • Hosted a successful annual GAP conference in 2009 and attended two successful conferences in Brisbane and Adelaide
    • Implemented electronic newsletters
    • Improved our adoption packs - new adoption handbooks, new adoption/foster care and trainers information packs and flyers
    • Commenced ongoing training for foster carers
    • Produced the annual GAP Calendar for 2010 and 2011
    • Introduced a reward system for our long term foster carers
    • Commenced annual GAP race nights at Cannington, and are working towards the same successful event running at Mandurah
All this and so much more! Plus, of course, our adoption numbers have soared in the past few years and with our new projects set to take off in 2011, GAP is going from strength to strength!

As of Monday January 17, I will be moving to the Pilbara to commence a new career in teaching. I am scared and excited, but I am sure if I can apply the same amount of passion and dedication to teaching as I did to GAP, I have a fair shot at not only enjoying the job, but being kind of ok at it! Of course, if anybody happens to make their way to the red dirt and find themselves in Hedland, by all means give me a call - the door is always open!

Thank you to each and every one of you for your love of greyhounds, whether you have adopted one or fostered one or many, or are just helped out however you can! Every little bit counts, and at the end of the day we are all here for the same reason! So keep up the amazing work, love your dogs the way they love you and keep on spreading the word about how gorgeous these hounds really are!

    Pets2Vets

A new animal transport service has just started up in Perth called Pets2Vets. They have come up with a new idea in being able to offer transport opportunities to people for their pets, 24 hours a day at a phone call.

Pets2Vets have been more than happy to lend GAP a hand and have offered us transport at no charge for our GAP greyhounds on occasions when they have needed to be transferred from one location to another when we couldn’t quite manage the trip ourselves.

Their services include transport to veterinary facilities, doggie day care, kennels, delivery from airport and much more. It also gives piece of mind to know that they are on call at any time of the day or night, even on public holidays.

They have excellent facilities with veterinary experienced staff so we thought you should know about their services in case you’re in need of any pet transport or emergency transport. For further information or any enquiries please contact Tarina on 0426 235 735 or take a look at their webpage Pets2Vets.

    Volunteers Needed

    Perth Cup
Saturday 5th February sees the running of the SKY Racing Perth Cup and as in previous years, GAP wish to have some of our lovely hounds on display at each set of gates to meet and greet the public.

Perth Cup is a race meeting that often attracts some new faces to the track and the “meet and greet” stuff is a good thing to do with the big crowds – it gets us a presence at the track on a big night and shows that we are trying to improve the post racing welfare opportunities for our greyhounds.

We would be requesting people and their dogs at the gates between 5.30 and 6.45pm you’d like to come along please email GAP and we will give you some more details.

    Heat Policy

With the hotter weather having arrived, we thought we should remind everyone of the heat policy surrounding the playgroups to ensure that we’re taking the best welfare considerations of our hounds into account. You can see details here.
