September 2010 Edition
GAP Champions
Every group needs a resident celebrity and where would GAP be without our Farmer Wants a Wife star - Emma Bramwell? Not only did she wow the nation on our TV screens during the latest Farmer Wants a Wife series, sunning herself alongside Farmer Jaimie up in the crystal waters of the Blue Lagoon Pearl Farm in Denham, she has been an incredible asset to GAP doing a stellar job with her foster hounds. Emma’s house offers the unique combination of being able to “Chook” and “Horse” test her foster greyhounds.

Here at GAP we are no longer surprised about the varying home environments that our adopted greyhounds head off into as pets. Variety is the spice of life – or so they say!! However that is where Emma’s unique ability to assess our GAP dogs for their reactions to horses and chooks is a great thing.

Emma adopted her first greyhound, the magnificent Thunder, in 2003 and has been a regular feature at all things GAP ever since. After the sad loss of Thunder Emma started fostering greyhounds in 2007 and then fell in love with the ridiculously handsome Stan in 2008. Despite adopting Stan she has kept fostering greyhounds and together Emma, Stan, the horses and chooks have fostered 33 greyhounds and helped them along their journey into the realms of the pet world.

While we will never advocate having free range chickens with the greyhounds (lets face it that would be an enormous ask of almost any dog breed!) we can at least get an indicator of the level of attention that they pay to Emma’s show chickens. Similarly the horses in Emma’s back yard give us a wonderful opportunity to see how the greyhounds have gone with their equine counterparts and that has been very handy over the years.

Thanks a million to Emma, Stan, the Chickens and Horses!

New AVA Vaccination Guidelines
A recent article in CHOICE magazine had us all reading with interest about the suggested new guidelines for vaccinations. We’d heard of this theory some years ago when it had been accepted within the USA and it is interesting to note that the AVA has now advocated following these vaccination guidelines.

For more information read the article here or check out the PDF version on our website.

Remember that our vets do a wonderful job and if you are thinking about moving towards this 3 year vaccination routine you should still discuss it with your vet.

Similarly don’t forget that annual health checks are still advised to ensure your dog stays in tip top condition and to provide you with opportunities for early detection of illness.

GAP RACE NIGHT
What a terrific night we all had at the Annual GAP Race on 21 August despite the rain! It was a pretty cold and wet night but that certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of the crowd – it was wonderful to see so many of our Sponsors, Vets, Foster Carers and GAP owners at the event and some of the dog’s old trainers were ecstatic at being able to hear where their dogs are now.

Thanks for such terrific support - we did very well on the Merchandise stand selling Calendars, Christmas Cards, Shirts, Vests and the cute new Kane Goes To the Beach kids books.

MAKE A WISH
Greyhounds WA have had a long standing association with the Make A Wish Foundation and through fundraising efforts have assisted many seriously ill kids to be able to have their wishes granted. GAP were invited to have a display on Saturday 18 September at the Make A Wish function at Greyhounds WA Mandurah. The event was for 100 kids who have already had their wish granted to enjoy a family day at the track with a bunch of kids activities.

Thanks to the GAP volunteers who attended the day it was a great success. The dogs loved the pats and cuddled and a few more families went home with thoughts of adopting a new pet!
