Five Reasons to Foster a Greyhound

Thinking of opening your home to a foster greyhound? Here’s five reasons why you should take the leap!

1. Canine companion without the cost.

Cost of living pressures can mean things that bring us joy are de-prioritised, including pet companionship. When you foster with Greyhounds as Pets there is minimal financial responsibility on you. Kibble is provided and veterinary costs are covered. We can even provide bedding, bowls and toys if you don’t have them. The only thing spent is a bit of your time!

2. Short term commitment; flexible around travel and work.

Dog ownership is a lifelong commitment, if you’re lucky lasting up to 20 years. Caring for and housing your dog during holidays and busy periods is always something to navigate. By fostering with GAP, you’re only making a short-term commitment, typically of four weeks. GAP is happy to work foster placements around your availability. Give a ‘hound a holiday, between your own holidays!

3. Get to know the breed with support and guidance

Don’t have much dog or greyhound experience? No worries! You will have access to our team of Adoptions Coordinators and Behaviourists, as well as be provided with a booklet of helpful information. We also have a Facebook group where GAP Foster Carers and Adopters share their tips, tricks and cute updates. Fostering is a great way to get to know Greyhounds before committing to adoption.

4. Watch them learn and grow.

There’s nothing better than watching your foster greyhound learn the joys of pet life. As a Foster Carer, you will guide them through lessons such as toilet training, socialising with other dogs, meeting new people and spending time alone. Get to know their quirks and watch their personalities blossom as they flourish with you. All these achievements set your foster dog up for success in their forever homes.

5. Low maintenance and fit into a variety of homes.

Greyhounds are about as low maintenance as dogs get, plus they suit almost any home! The GAP team behaviourally assess our greyhounds to determine their most suitable forever or foster family. This includes factors such as their ability to manage time alone, sociability with dogs of different sizes, and enthusiasm around toys. This assessment combined with the information provided in Foster Applications, enables the GAP team to find a match who slots into your home with minimal disruption. While there are variations between dogs, most greyhounds only require one or two 20 minute walks to keep them happy.

Don’t think you could say goodbye?

We completely understand! To ease this feeling, when possible, the GAP Team will send on updates and provide your contact details to the adopter if you would like to keep in touch. Adopters also may join the GAP Network group on Facebook to post updates. Additionally, you benefit from the rewarding and fulfilling experience of setting up a greyhound for success in their forever home. All they learn and achieved with you will be enjoyed by their new family. Fostering is also integral to finding regional adopters greyhounds as we will only match them a dog with home experience. By completing a foster period, you can take on more fosters and continue to contribute to dogs finding their homes.
