Damian Martin, 2024 National Greyhound Adoption Month Ambassador

Wildcat encounters greyhound for a won all result

Cats and dogs don’t always get along but legendary Wildcat Damian Martin says greyhounds are friends to all the world.

The Olympian and six-time National Basketball League champion recently met fellow retired athlete Gypsy the greyhound in his new role as Greyhounds as Pets (GAP) WA ambassador.

“I know cats and dogs aren’t traditionally best mates but greyhounds get along with everyone, even this Wildcat,” Damian said.

“Greyhounds are quirky characters with big personalities and they’re wonderful entertainers, winning fans everywhere they go. I’m a bit jealous, actually.”

Launching National Greyhound Adoption Month today, Damian said April was the ideal time to contact GAP and team up with an easy-going pet like Gypsy for $75.

“On the court, I had my specialist position as a defensive player but greyhounds are the ultimate all-rounder,” he said.

“They can take up almost any position from living in city apartments, to the family suburban home or even rural properties.

“And while I’ve found it a little harder to keep fit in retirement, Gypsy sleeps up to 20 hours a day and stays trim. Greyhounds are very low maintenance and perfect for the busy home.”

Damian will be at The Camfield on April 13 from 11am to 4pm, along with some of GAP’s adopted dogs, to talk greyhounds with potential new adoptees.

All dogs adopted from GAP are vet checked, fully vaccinated, microchipped, sterilised and have had a dental treatment. Each dog also has a behaviour assessment to understand their personalities and match them to the right home.
