When Horatio first arrived home, his adopter quickly realised life was about to change in the best possible way.
Originally known as Hopscotch, his new family chose a name that better suited the elegant black hound settling into their home.
“I chose the name Horatio, as he is so elegant and it was similar to Hopscotch…Horri is perfect.”
Today, Horatio shares a calm household with his retired adopter and Florence, an elderly rescue cat who joined the family in 2021.
Although his adopter had previously owned a rescue whippet and loved the breed’s personality, greyhounds were largely uncharted territory.
“I did not have much experience with greyhounds before Horatio, but I appreciate the calm, gentle, loving nature of Horatio.”
Like many newly adopted hounds, Horatio needed a little guidance while learning the ropes of pet life. She described him as a ” Very tall toddler. Everything in the mouth!”
Fortunately, Horatio settled in beautifully.
“Horri settled in well, (he) was a little stubborn and used his body to shepherd me sometimes. I think he has adapted wonderfully and our routine of walks and quiet times has been awesome.”
One of the biggest successes has been the relationship between Horatio and Florence. The pair have developed a respectful friendship, with Horatio understanding exactly where he stands in the household.
“He is respectful of Florence and not really bothered by her. He accepts she is above him in the home hierarchy.”
Florence, meanwhile, seems equally happy to have him around.
“She sleeps on my bed, he has his beds on the floor. Florence loves having him around, she cuddles him and respects his privacy while he is sleeping.”
When asked what makes Horatio so special, the answer comes easily.
“Horatio has enriched our lives in many ways, mostly his joy at just being part of the family. He loves people and is always up for a chat while out and about. He is gentle, loving, calm, non-reactive, funny, cheeky and we just love him to bits. Horatio has been with us for 3 months now and I couldn’t imagine our home without him.”
The benefits haven’t just been emotional, either.
“I have lost my spare tyre as daily walks, sometimes twice daily, are non-negotiable, definitely a health benefit for us both.”
For anyone considering adopting a greyhound, Horatio’s family has a simple message.
“Adopting a greyhound will be the best decision you ever made. We often speak to others while walking and they love how quiet Horri is and surprised there is no aggression with his demeanour. I advocate for greyhounds constantly.”
